Is Opie too mean?
« on: December 16, 2004, 05:33:25 PM »
Last night we were out playing on the server and I banned a player for his behavior and being a smart mouth.  He was really good and I can understand his frustration at his team, me included, that we sucked.  However, I don't see this as an excuse for his behavior to his team mates.  His constant meele attacks on team mates and smart mouth is what pushed me over the edge.  I did give him several warnings.

My question is am I too mean and did I unjustly ban his butt?

Perhaps a warning then a kick instead of a ban?

The only person that I have banned so far is the one that I warned repeatedly for language that turned around and cursed me out.

He didn't last very long.  ;)

Just practice a little more mercy.

CUT HIS HEAD OFF!  (spanish accent)
:sword:

I would say a warnings, then 'kick', then a ban. Let's get serious here Opie. You totally bypassed the pleasure of a good kick! You went from a warning to a ban..and excluded the bonafide 'kick'. Do you not like the 'kick'? Should we take the 'kick' option away because it won't be used? I just don't understand Opie. You had a legitimate reason to use the 'kick' but didn't use it? If the 'kick' was used, you would have not only enjoyed the excitement of using the 'kick' option, but also the pleasure of receiving a response when the 'kickee' comes back to dish out a plethora of verbs and adjectives in your general direction.

USE THE KICK! USE THE KICK! USE THE KICK! USE THE KICK!
USE THE KICK! USE THE KICK! USE THE KICK! USE THE KICK!
USE THE KICK! USE THE KICK! USE THE KICK! USE THE KICK!
USE THE KICK! USE THE KICK! USE THE KICK! USE THE KICK!
USE THE KICK! USE THE KICK! USE THE KICK! USE THE KICK!

Mostly I don't want to have to deal with the whiner when they come back on and start with the "Why was I kicked you *blankety blank blank*?  I'm going to kick your *blank blank blushing blank blank*.  You *blank blankety blank*!"  If they are going to have an attitude once then it's going to happen again and I really don't feel like being disrespected on our own server.  And yes, I do give a couple warnings, unless they are really belligerent and then they don't get to finish their sentence.

I have seen Opie the * Server Admin from Hell and honestly he was mostly in the right, I agree that maybe a 'kick' first instead of going straight to ban or maybe setting up a 24 hour ban just for Opie, But is opie too mean. NO!

Those guys would of been Baned anyway
Because they would have come back into
the sever and taunted Opie some more.

I go for the warning, then if they fail to clean it up, then I do a kick.

Haven't had anyone come back after that, but should they choose to, and continue with the behaviour that got them kicked in the first place, I will tell them that their behaviour is the reason they are now banned, and ban them.

My favourite was the time Jolly and I were on a server and someone was cussing.  I politely warned him, and he in turn cussed me out, I promptly banned him.  By the best part was that there were others warning him that I was the admin!

Opie being the BOFH that he is...there is only one correct answer....OF COURSE HE'S TOO MEAN!!!!  If he wasn't he couldn't be a BOFH.  But that's why we love him sooooo much!

I'd have to agree with Wolvy that the kick could be lots of fun especially when they come back....then the ban.  You might actually get someone who wakes up with the kick and straightens out their behavior.

Snauz you push it way to much, you know that don't you?
I mean, First your taunting them to no end and getting the pants beaten off of you.
Then Repeatedly ask for a certain permission, you honestly have no right to.
and now you asking the to ban you from their server.
What give, I know you're young and dumb, but you got to know a limit.

You know, I know of a company whos admin password was 'password', but in a matter of security they chaged it to 'wordpass'

You could always finger the server until you found an open userid then write a script to open a remote root shell when it's executed.  Just name the script after a command like ls.  Then edit an admins account so that their environment has it's path for the ls command set to where ever you put your script.  Opps, did the bad Opie surface once again?

A pasword cracker (John the Ripper, or other type software) would have it in under seven minutes.
