Bunch of New Pentium 4 CPUs in Late August
Posted 8/15/02 at 11:53 pm by Rat

Well, another interesting bit on the launching schedule of new Intel Pentium 4 processors. This time the info arrive from our reliable sources, which we prefer to keep secret :) Namely on August 26 we can expect Intel to please us with a couple of new Pentium 4 models.

According to the info we have at our disposal, on that day three new CPUs will come out. They are: Pentium 4 2.8GHz supporting 533MHz QPB, Pentium 4 2.66GHz supporting 533MHz Quad Pumped Bus and Pentium 4 2.6GHz, which will be the last Intel processor for 400MHz FSB frequency.

The new solutions will be set as follows: Pentium 4 2.8GHz will cost $508, Pentium 4 2.66Ghz and Pentium 4 2.6GHz will cost $401. At the same time Intel will reduce the prices of its Pentium 4 2.53GHz and 2.5GHz. Starting from August 26 they will cost $243, having moved to the "best-buy" Pentium 4 processors in terms of price-to-performance ratio.

AMD rolled out its processor rating last year. The rating describes the speed of the CPU based on numerous benchmarks which list can be found on the web-site of the company. Although this approach is very positive, it also has several disadvantages: as our own research reveals, in some cases AMD`s processors with rating number of 2200+ cannot compete with Pentium 4 running at 2.2GHz. Nevertheless, Intel is also rumoured to use processor ratings with their Banias CPUs (see this news-story). Is it a new trend?

Some people with knowledge of the matter confirmed that Intel will reduce the prices on its Pentium 4 and Celeron microprocessors on the 10th of November. Here is the price-list for the tray versions of Intel’s processors bought in quantities starting from one thousand units.

Intel Pentium 4 Pricing, effective November 10, 2002
Model New Price Price Cut (%)
Pentium 4 3.06GHz $637 -
Pentium 4 2.80GHz $401 21%
Pentium 4 2.66GHz $305 24%
Pentium 4 2.60GHz $305 24%
Pentium 4 2.53GHz $193 20%
Pentium 4 2.40GHz $163 15%
Pentium 4 2.20GHz $163 15%
Intel Celeron Pricing, effective November 10, 2002
Celeron 2.20GHz $103 -
Celeron 2.10GHz $89 -
Celeron 2.0GHz $83 20%
Celeron 1.80GHz $69 18%
Celeron 1.70GHz $54 23%
Celeron 1.40GHz $54 N/D
Celeron 1.30GHz $54 N/D

The 2.4 on down are cheaper then AMD

Benchmark  Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHz AMD Athlon XP 2800+
Benchmark 1 20 /16.4
Benchmark 2 21.1 /16.3
Benchmark 3 11.4/ 8.8
Benchmark 4 87.4 / 64.4
Benchmark 5 107.3 /98.6
Benchmark 6 89.9 /68.4
Benchmark 7 126.6 /127.1
Benchmark 8 194.4 / 182.4
Benchmark 9 33.4 /34.6
Benchmark 10 61.8/ 71.2
Benchmark 11 41.1
25.6 33.4
20.4
Benchmark 12 6.4 /5.5
Benchmark 13 5.2 /4.4

Summing up the results obtained in viewports, we can conclude that in case of multiple light sources and massive geometry (in Smooth+ Highlights as well as in Wireframe mode) the leadership belongs to Intel Pentium 4, which manages to outperform the rival from AMD by 15-20%. In texturing benchmarks both racers run equally fast.
