Colorado May Not Happen
« on: January 22, 2010, 02:16:11 AM »
So I figured I would post here since I'm pissed of and stressed after dealing with this company.

As some of you know, I was hired onto War Games Interactive and was to head out late September but upon many delays for various reasons it looks like I won't be heading out there. For the last two months right after Thanksgiving, limited to no information was being sent out as to what was going on within the company and why we where not heading out there to start working. After New Years, I started to pursue getting information as to what happened to the company, why we haven't gotten an update, and what is currently going on which I was given a reply of that there will be an update after this person I talked to would get back from his vacation. After two weeks of friends being told the same thing that we should get a response and an update, it was still sent out. Earlier this week I put some more pressure on getting information for this update that everyone that is not in the Denver area needed.

I thought I'd post the last few emails to show what I've been dealing with here and see what your guys thoughts on this since I'm at the end of my rope with them and I don't know if I should even try to continue with them if it magically does start.

Side note, yes I have been applying to different companies during this whole time as well as sent an email to my old job asking to see if there was an open position. I also may have a lead to Disney Animations and will be giving my friend a call tomorrow to see what the status is on that.

Rob is the Vice President of Operations for this supposed company.

Hi Rob,

A company wide update is really needed right now. It really has been too long since we have heard anything from the company and especially since you told me that you would send one out after your vacation was over. There have been many rumors floating around and people hearing different things which it will really help to have you set everything straight by letting us know what is going on with the company, what the projected times are for getting this company up and running, finalizing an actual move date, and most of all finalizing when we will be working. What worries me the most is that it was stated that we would be moving back in September and now it has almost 4 months since with no actual move date in mind as well as the limited communication coming from the company itself.

I know you have been really busy but it is really important for a lot of us to be notified as to what is going on with the company and if this is somehow starting in the near future, we need to know when because it does take us time to find those apartments and get all the contract information through.

Please respond to this because we really do need an official update as to what is going on.

Thanks for your time,

Andrew #######

I will send an update tomorrow. Sorry. I have been dealing with personal stuff ever since I returned.

Hi Rob,

Thank you for the reply but I hate to continually ask for these updates since we didn't receive them again but the people out side of the Denver area really do need to know what is going on. With the lack of information coming out from the company, it has been questionable as to if this will actually happen or not and how well the company will operate. Please send out an update for us this week because a lot of us do need it. I know you may be dealing with things within the company and personally, but it doesn't take too much time to send out something to everyone within the company.

It will be really helpful for you to get this update out there

Thank you for your time,

Andrew #######

Well, if you can get me the email addresses for everyone involved, then I will gladly get this done. But as of now, I currently only have a few people.

Get me the list, and I will send the email.

Rob with this reply I now have to seriously ask, is this company actually going to start or are you pulling everyone's chains? So far from what I've seen with this company, everything has been completely unprofessional and in complete chaos. How do you expect me to give you everyone's email addresses for all those that are involved when I only know of a handful while you are the Vice President of Operations. Being in that position, you should either know most that are to be working within the company or if there is a Human Resources manager, you can easily contact them.

I will get you the list of people I can get a hold of but if this company ever does happen, there needs to be some major changes in how things are handled.

Time to cut your loses and move on.  Don't expect to have any further contact with them.

Do you care where you live as long as your can start working on something?

I don't really care where I live as long as I can get my foot in the door to really start my career with the animation industry. I've even been applying over to Singapore just hoping to land something.

Does it have to be animation related or would you be ok with making an income while waiting to get into animation?

At this point in time, I'm just looking for any job. I do really want it to be animation related so it can really add to the experience I am lacking on my resume but I will just have to go with whatever I can find so I can get some kind of an income.

Sorry to hear this is happening.  I know how you are feeling, and know how frustrating it can be when the dream job you are promised is not coming true.

OK, here it is from me.  Walk away, cut your losses.

Unless you have a "Word From God" moment about staying, it is time to find something to pay the bills while you get your break into the industry.  You are in the same situation that an actor is in while looking for the next role.  Earn money any way you can, legally, and continue looking for the job you want while you do that.

You have a lot of friends pulling for you, and we want the best for you.  Pray and proceed.

Thanks Z, it is pretty frustrating with this company and like you said I'm just done with them. If of course nothing happens and they do ask if I am going, I may go because I do need the work experience and I have a ton of friends that will be up there.

I did just get an update from my friend over at the Disney Animations who is dropping my name down at the HR and is also talking to the Senior Technical Artist about my work as well as having them take a closer look at my application. I do pray that I can get a job there, I applied at 2 positions that I can do down there so hopefully it all does work out.

I also got a call from another friend over at Blue Sky Studios who told me of a position opening so right now I'm getting my work together to send up to him so that he can hand deliver that to the Lead Artist up there.

Not too sure else what I can do for getting my foot into the door but I have started on a new Show Reel that I'm shooting to have done late March if anything. I'm trying to build this faster than how long it took to do my first one back at Full Sail so we will see how that goes.

I also finished up some freelance which will be a little bit of income coming in so that will take care of a few things but not really much. For now though, I will just keep looking up companies and shooting my app out there hoping to hear something from them.

In the meantime you need to also get some work history.  Period.  Show them that you will work at a job, and meanwhile you are still pursuing the career of your choice.

That and you need to be able to pay your bills as well.

That hasn't been going as smoothly as well, I have been shooting apps out for regular work but I tend to get a lot of we are not hiring. I've even got my resume up on Monster.com but the only issue is I keep getting calls to work as Insurer or a Financial Specialist which I have to keep turning down because they want you to first pay for classes ($100+) and then it is all commission based which they can't really guarantee you the work.

What is the most important thing here?

Pay the bills?

Work in the industry until you get your big break?

I say take something that pays the bills, and keep working for that break.  Don't be afraid to work at something totally unrelated, just maintain focus on your goals while you pay the bills.  many actors have been something unrelated to their chosen craft.  Harrison Ford was a carpenter, many others were waiters.  Take something to pay the bills and keep putting the resumes out there.

Don't wait for someone to ask you, be proactive and give them a reason to notice you.  Preferably a good reason. ;)

I don't think you really read what I said Z, I have been shooting apps out to other places around town just looking for work but I'm mainly getting the we are not hiring reply. I have been actively looking which I just remembered that the Ihop near me was hiring earlier this month so I need to go see if they still are.

I'm not really waiting for someone to ask me for a job but Monster sure does bring in a lot of those Insurance and Financial Advisor seekers. I just can say I won't work for them if I'm having to shell out a few hundred dollars to do some training and then can't get guaranteed pay.

There are a lot of other computer industry job sites other than Monster you should be spamming your resume on too.  Try ComputerJobs.com, USAjobs.gov, and Dice.com (probably the best).  Get your resume out for the widest coverage possible.  But to be honest, the best jobs always come from people you already know.  Make a ton of IT friends everywhere you go and keep in touch with them.

I've got my resume up on USA Jobs as well as their Student USA Jobs. I didn't know about those other two sites you recommended but tomorrow I'll definitely get on them and start poking around for a job.

I also just got an email from a company out in London that wants some more stuff from me which I'll be spending some time at Kinkos this weekend getting ready to send out to him. So far, I've got some pretty big hopes in 3 different companies which 2 friends are trying to get me into theirs. I just hope I will hear more back from them as well as maybe even a job.

I just got some good news from a friend of mine over at Disney Animations. Apparently my work made some good marks and has now been passed on to the final review board which I hope it will make it further and result in a phone call from them!

I read that with no problem.  My meaning is that you need to be working at something to establish a work history while working to find that other job that you really want.  But then I am a work-a-holic and would work at fast food if I couldn't find something in IT, just to keep working and try to pay the bills.

Grats on the Disney deal.  If it comes through, hopefully you will be in Orlando so I can visit you when I go to Florida.  Heck, I would need a "behind the scenes" tour from you. :D

The thought of London is pretty exciting too.  Hang in there and keep pushing to find that job to start your career.
