btw, weve had cable at my moms now for about a week does anyone know all the supplies i might need to hook mine up to it as well?  or do we have to have a 2nd line for mine to be conected?

(do i need stuff like a hub, lan cable, and install the cd or is thier stuff i  have to change on hers so i dont need a 2nd line and we both can be on at the same time?)

I would suggest the following solution:

Parts needed:

[list=1]

Instructions:
[list=1]
  • Connect the WAN port on the router to the LAN port on the cable modem.
  • Plug the PCs into the switch ports on the router.
  • Set the TCP/IP settings on the PCs to be "Obtain IP address automatically."
  • Start fragging.

How is that for a basic set of instructions?

Forgot one thing...

Shut everything down then...
Turn on Cable modem wait 30 seconds to a minute

Turn on Router...wait 30 seconds to a minute

Then turn on PC's...after that you may need to open some ports on the router and forward to you pc to host games, but we can help you out with that later.

Also there are a dozen different brands of router/switches, get the one with the best rebate.  You can also go wireless if you want to.

I was just going to suggest the wireless option..  Costs anywhere from $40 - $70 for a basic router with 4 port switch. PLace that next to the main computer with the cable modem.. And then purchase a wireless network adapter (around $40-$60) and then put that one in yours. Then you don't have to run wires to your computer.  :)  That is my plan.. i have a Linksys wireless router with 4 port switch. It is a firewall and DHCP server as well.  Eventually, once I get a wireless adapter, I'll put my router and modem in this cabinet in my basement and then no cables will have to be run anywhere....WOO HOOO!

If you need anyhelp.. we got your back!

Compusa has the D-link 4 port 802.11b wireless router for $29.99 after Rebate

Tigerdirect has the netgear one for the same price, this is the one that ZW and I have.  It has some nice features.

Then you need a wireless nic. Compusa has one for $26.50

You can do some more looking around if you want, just remember that their are different standards these are 802.11b which is good enough for home usage.  Others are 802.11g

I think Zwarrior told me the Wireless router you guys have ...is actually not a switch but a hub?

There are tons of options out there Rico... and inexpensive! Which is fantastic!

If you would like any help...just ask....:)

You can usually pick one up for less than $50.

Only the wireless side is a hub.  The wired side is a switch, and the wireless section is a node on that switch.

As far as where to get the linksys?  I use CompUSA,  I would compare prices first then buy.

Contact Wolvy.  He's the man.  I would recommend turning on the MTU and bumping it to 1500 though.
