Power Down Protector !!!!
« on: December 12, 2002, 01:09:57 AM »
This device addresses an issue that has long been overlooked: your chip is the hottest when you first power down your PC. This device keeps your HSF fan running after you hit the power button, draining the heat out of the chip safely. This is very similar to a turbo timer on cars. This could extend the life of your chip significantly, especially if you overclock your pc.

In addition, this slick little unit also controls a SECOND fan. A good use of this is if you want you can keep your blowhole fan "powered on on" so that it will continue to exhaust out hot air.

Lastly, the amount of time the fan runs can be customized to your needs.

Yeah You would rather have your CPU burn up untill it cools down at a slow rate...

with this your CPU will have Air flowing through it Cooling it a lot faster. so its not exposed to the rapid incline in temp then the slow cool off time......

Actually, if the thing really works, then it is well worth the $15.  But then, how much damage is really done to your proc when the heat is dissapating without the HSF running.  Remember, you don't have any processes running on it, so it is cooling, not generating more heat.

That is my thought.  I remember people use to say don't ever leave you computer on cause it's better to just leave it going, then it doesn't have to deal with rapid changes in temp or with power changes.  I didn't buy it then and don't now.  I've never had a cpu burn up or die from normal use.  Maybe when a case or HSF fan fails, but not just because it's been used.  Plus by the time my cpu is old enough for this to matter, hopefully I would have upgraded, c'mon a XP 1600 for $55, I think I paid $75 for my 1 ghz a year and a half ago.  Shoot, most of your cases cost more than your processor currently would cost you.

The Engineer put his two cents in.....

Processors are designed to deal with the heat dissipation in mind.  It does not cause any additional wear on your processor by letting it have a long cool down time.  Just keep in mind that the use of a heat sink is required in all processor designs.

I'm guessing that this particular myth was thought up by someone who does a lot of microwave cooking.  A Microwave energizes the molecules from the inside out and will continue cooking your food for up to five minutes after the cooking cycle due to residual radiation working off its energy within the food item.  Because your processor seemingly works like magic, as does a microwave, one explanation is used to define another.

To me it's just another scare tactic used to sell more useless junk.

The processor disspates heat from the core until it reaches equilibrium, which means that it is cooling.  Thus the problem with the processor overheating doesn't happen when it's off, only when it's running.  To have the device would be a geeking grunt thing, but otherwise not a practicle device.
