In the Botmatch test, a heavy load is put on the CPU. However, the graphics card also has more on its hands with additional objects (the figures) and effects (gunfire, explosions). Here, the Radeon and the FX are nearly neck-on-neck. It's only in 1600x1200 that the FX manages to pull ahead.

Size and Heat seems to be an issue when concidering this card.  It does do well when you run all the options and really load the card up with all the graphical features.  Makes you wonder how much is going to change with driver enhancements coming out?

Is that a wind tunnel or your computer?  I think I'll stick with my TI4200 for now.

Historically, NVIDA has been able to produce around 25% more performance through their driver updates over time.

Interesting things to learn about the GeForce FX VPU: From Xbitlabs

NVIDIA has implemented adaptive-anisotropic filtering techniques in the GeForce FX chip. Now drivers offer “Balanced Performance” and “Aggressive Performance” options. The former matches ATI’s “Quality” setting, while the latter offers something that resembles ATI’s “Performance” option. In “Performance” mode the RADEON 9700 PRO simply kills the rival, while in quality modes there is a battle between the two.
ATI used to offer better Anti-Aliasing in terms of quality and still does it. The GeForce FX 5800 Ultra has no chances here, at least, until the 8X mode is selected.
Due to higher core-clock, the GeForce FX 5800 Ultra can work more effectively in VillageMark compared to the GeForce4 Ti4600 and RADEON 9700 PRO.
GeForce FX 5800 Ultra cannot beat the RADEON 9700 PRO in vertex shaders speed.
GeForce FX 5800 Ultra does pixel shader operations faster than the main rival due to higher clock-speed.
The GeForce FX 5800 graphics cards will be the first solutions of their kind we will hear. Forget about the 6000rpm monster on your CPU and listen to the sound of NVIDIA’s proprietary flow here. Well, I hope those vendors who prefer their customers to hear something better than the sound of NVIDIA’s flow will install something less aggressive on their products.
All in all, the GeForce FX cannot be called a “winner” or a “loser” at this point. It is faster just a bit and it came 5 months later than the rival. That explains a lot and should make you understand that it will stay among the graphics cards to hold “a powerful” title months longer than the RADEON 9700 PRO when NVIDIA finally improves their drivers. Currently the GeForce FX cannot bring you anything special, unless you are a game developer, as I think.

In short. Expect the real full review as soon as we get the graphics card from somewhere. Until then read the following:

- AnandTech Review
- Tom’s Hardware Review
- Extreme Tech's review
- Hexus's review
PS. Remember that there is King “R350” Kong to come this Spring...

More on R350 6:02 PM - Joe "Steejee" West - Hardware: ATI -  (124)
[Spicy Story] Sounds like ATI has an Ace up their sleave:  a top dog at ATI has told us that the R350 will debut in march, and as told before will be 10% faster than the FX, but the kicker will be that it's also $150 cheaper.  The massive price difference is due to the fact the R350 will be a 10 layer PCB, while Nvidia's fastest will require 12 layers.  Graphics wars are gonna be interesting in the coming months to say the least...

You got links for these?

I do agree that it sounds like the graphics wars may be heating up again, kinda like in the days of 3Dfx vs nVidia.

FYI

Next Gen Nvidia is only a few months away.  Yes, the card AFTER the FX card.  Keep in mind people, Nvidia jumped to .13 micron from .15.  ATI has yet to do that.  While I see the FX card as probably being a failure from a sales standpoint at the moment, I believe in the long run getting to .13 before ATI will even the keel.

Next-gen ATI is also due out very soon.  And I believe it's still .15 micron.

Right now, the 9700 Pro is definitely a better option, but I think Nvidia realizes this and I also think they might have something up their sleeve with drivers and what the FX card will be able to do in the future.  I'm sure there's some hidden stuff under there somewhere.  ;)

Sapphire is offering a whole lot of card for the price, and the Radeon 9500 Atlantis Pro offers an impressive mix of price, performance and bundled extras. At a street price of under-$190, this compares to a name brand, retail GeForce4 Ti 4200-8X ($150-$160), GeForce4 Ti 4400 ($200-$210) and the GeForce4 Ti 4600 ($240+). Using this scenario, the Radeon 9500 Atlantis Pro is an excellent value, as the card equals the performance of a GeForce4 Ti 4600, yet can outperform it when anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering are brought into play, and is fully DirectX 9 compatible.

Nothing on the nVidia site to indicate either way.

GeForceFX to be chopped?
February 7, 2003 - 8:15 PM by Patrick Barnes Views: 709
Post Comment
NVIDIA UK HAS REFUSED to comment on a posting on a 3D bulletin board claiming that the GeForce FX is for the chop.

According to the rumour, posted at x-3DFX, Nvidia is canning the GeForce FX and has told its foundry, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp (TSMC), to stop when 100,000 NV30 are produced.

The same posting claimed that Nvidia will now concentrate on NV31, NV34, and NV35 and want to ensure that it doesn't get caught short by any cunning plans ATI may or may not have.

GeForce FX Implements Four Rendering Pipelines. Did NVIDIA Mislead the Whole World?
Posted 2/23/03 at 7:33 pm by Anton

Modern graphics processors are so complex that no company can avoid mistakes when developing new chips. A lot of capabilities, patterns and other blocks of GPUs are eventually cured by software and drivers, whereas those bugs in hardware design that cannot be treated easily are simply ignored and certain capabilities are disabled, as it always costs too lot of money and time to address an issue when you have to create chips that consist millions of transistors every 6 to 9 month. Therefore, never expect a hardware bug to be corrected before the next chip is out. I can remember that the TNT-series of graphics chips were not able to do trilinear filtering, while the GeForce256, GeForce2 and GeForce3 had a bug with S3TC decompression, S3’s Savage2000 featured a T&L that never worked, ATI’s Rage128 Pro supported anisotropic filtering that was disabled in drivers. This week it was revealed that the latest NVIDIA’s GeForce FX graphics processor features only 4 rendering pipelines, but not 8, as the Santa Clara, California-based VPU developer claims everywhere on its web-site.

Our colleagues over at The Inquirer web-site received a couple of days ago confirmation from an NVIDIA’s representative that the GeForce FX VPU has 4 rendering pipelines with 2 TMUs per each pipe. The formerly known as code-named NV30 can therefore do 8 textures per clock only in multitexturing. An NVIDIA’s fellow adder that there are certain cases where the GeForce FX can work with 8 textures:

z-rendering;
stencil operations;
texture operations;
shader operations.
Color + Z rendering is done at 4 pixels per clock.
I wonder if there are any other peculiarities in the actual architecture of the GeForce FX VPU that NVIDIA decided to keep confidential. And what about the architecture of the GeForce FX derivatives

Had they implemented the 8 pipes that they touted for so long, ATI would have been left crying like a little %#^!* at the prom.  Could you imagine that card with twice the pipes?
