Your next upgrade?
« on: September 18, 2002, 09:21:10 AM »
When do you think your next upgrade will be and what do you think you will upgrade to?  This isn't pie in the sky monster system price isn't a concern.  This is realistic good system at good prices.

I am looking at a few things:

New processor, AMD for sure, speed as yet undetermined.

1GB PC2700 RAM faster if available

Asus A7V333

GeForce4 Ti4400 (or better if the price is right)

New burner (Plextor?)

New hard drive - Western Digital

New case?

Hay have you read about the issues the the MX card have with UT 2003? Oh sorry ZW you already know. :lol To bad you have to run in 16 bit. But for $99 you could be up there with the big boys. DX8.1b card to run a DX8.1b game like UT 2003. I'm only geten 80fps at defalt settings 1280 x 1024. with all on highest geten 35fps. nv 4400 is $200 for 30 fps faster. that's great if your monitor refreashes at 120 like mine. But I don't think 30 more frames is worth $100.

According to certain industry insiders, DDR-II on graphics cards is going to appear in early 2003 and work at the resulting speeds of about 1GHz. The GDDR-III will come later in 2003, probably in the fourth quarter or in the very end of the year, and will be able to function at clock-speeds of up to 1.5 – 1.6GHz. Although GDDR-III will evolve from DDR-II, it will have some pretty important differences, as stated by the sources. Firstly, GDDR-III will make use of a single-ended, unidirectional strobe that separates the reads and writes. DDR-II, by contrast, uses differential bi-directional strobes. Secondly, GDDR-III will utilise a "pseudo-open drain" interface technique that is based on voltage rather than current. This was done so that graphics chips can be compatible with DDR, DDR-II and GDDR-III. Like DDR-II, GDDR-III interface uses 1.8-Volt SSTL. Such memory is better suited to point-to-point links used on graphics cards and will allow the GPU developers to reach the new performance and feature heights with their products.

Apart from ATI Technologies and NVIDIA, GDDR-III is supported by leading memory manufacturers, including Micron, Hynix and Infineon. Well, it seems that the NV40 and R400 based graphics cards will be equipped with brand-new types of memory. Amazing how two fabless semiconductor companies can drive the industry.

Intel to launch 3Ghz+ CPU on Nov 14
Posted by overclocker at 10:11

Intel is slated to launch the 3GHz version of its Pentium 4 processor on Nov. 14, fulfilling promises made by company executives more than a year ago, according to solution providers informed about the release date.

The product launch likely will affect pricing throughout Intel's P4 lineup in the remaining six weeks of the fourth quarter, which covers the peak holiday selling season, said the solution providers, who wished to remain anonymous.

An Intel spokesman would neither confirm nor deny the Nov. 14 launch date but said the company still plans to release the 3GHz P4 chip this quarter.

Scary.  For my degree, I had to do a report.  Mine was on the history and future of the Intel processor.  Everyone laughed when I quoted Intel and said they would have a 1GHz processor by 2000.  That was there goal, and now 2.5 years later  they are pushing 3GHz!

Compusa has the 80gb 7200 rpm 8mb cache Western Digital HD for $80.  $1 per gig, not bad.  See ad for details.

Well, like Wolfy I have done an upgrade as well, not the kind of upgrade I was planning but it will hold me until the course of technology evolves again.  Asus A7V333, 1800+, 512 PC2700, 80 GIG ATA133 Maxtor HD, 72x CDRom, DVD Drive, Plextor 32x-10x-40x Burner.  I am still running my Gforce2-Ultra and plan to upgrade my video card next.  I am still leaning towards the 4600 as I expect the prices to drop very soon.  There are better cards out there but its doubtful I will spend $450.00 on a card again like I did with the Ultra.  Its great to be at the latest hardware but it is also very costly and as fast as technology is changing, it makes senses to spend half the money and do twice as many upgrades.  This allows me to upgrade the two kids computers as well as the hardware naturally falls down hill.  I also plan to purchase Windows XP-Pro in the near future.
