Half-Life 2\'s Source Code Leaked

Valve's Gabe Newell has confirmed the Half-Life 2 source code link in this forum post. Here's what he had to say:
Ever have one of those weeks? This has just not been the best couple of days for me or for Valve.
Yes, the source code that has been posted is the HL-2 source code.

Here is what we know:

1) Starting around 9/11 of this year, someone other than me was accessing my email account. This has been determined by looking at traffic on our email server versus my travel schedule.
2) Shortly afterwards my machine started acting weird (right-clicking on executables would crash explorer). I was unable to find a virus or trojan on my machine, I reformatted my hard drive, and reinstalled.
3) For the next week, there appears to have been suspicious activity on my webmail account.
4) Around 9/19 someone made a copy of the HL-2 source tree.
5) At some point, keystroke recorders got installed on several machines at Valve. Our speculation is that these were done via a buffer overflow in Outlook's preview pane. This recorder is apparently a customized version of RemoteAnywhere created to infect Valve (at least it hasn't been seen anywhere else, and isn't detected by normal virus scanning tools).
6) Periodically for the last year we've been the subject of a variety of denial of service attacks targetted at our webservers and at Steam. We don't know if these are related or independent.

Well, this sucks.

What I'd appreciate is the assistance of the community in tracking this down. I have a special email address for people to send information to, helpvalve@valvesoftware.com. If you have information about the denial of service attacks or the infiltration of our network, please send the details. There are some pretty obvious places to start with the posts and records in IRC, so if you can point us in the right direction, that would be great.

We at Valve have always thought of ourselves as being part of a community, and I can't imagine a better group of people to help us take care of these problems than this community.

So please, if you can, help Valve out!

Bad news. Speculation at first was just that the SDK had been leaked. Obviously not. This could spell bad news for HL2's release...which of course, was recently delayed.

I'M PISSED.:plasma:

Having been on security teams, and also faced some of these problems, I am more than willing to do whatever I can.

I would hope that the rest of the gaming community came come together to bring the culprits to justice.  There is a fine line between a white hat and a black hat, and this crosses the line.

Book: Very specific. It is, however, somewhat fuzzy around the area of kneecaps.

Yet another MS security hole.....  I hope the CCIA wins their lawsuit against MS for all the security problems.

Computers seized in FBI Half Life 2 raid

Warrant shows feds were hunting down software
By INQUIRER staff: Monday 19 January 2004, 15:32

THERE'S A STORY on a web site that appears to be connected to investigations the FBI is making into the theft of Half Life 2 code.
According to this web site, Chris Toshok's home was raided by the FBI last week with a warrant to search his house and computers.
Toshok also said in account on his blog that the Secret Service was involved in the raid.
But after taking a heap of computer kit and other material, and taking photographs of the house, the agents gave Toshok a receipt for the goods they had taken.
A search warrant they gave Toshok said it was issued in relation to Valve Software, Half Life 2, Counter Strike and other games and related materials. The feds were also searching for emails related to Valve, to Half Life 2, or to IP addresses connected to the game code.
He is a member of a coders' group called Hungry Programmers, and says that other members were also raided on the 14th of January.
The warrant, the web site and the receipt for the material seized can be found here. The account reads like it could be part of a Half Life 2 episode itself, if this is what really happened. µ
