BYW I am not a new member. I just take very long vacations... Lots of new faces...

I have a couple of suggestions...

First of all I am assuming that you have some kind oF generic Disk (Hard drive) If so, I suggest using a real fdisk utility like AEFDISK, or WIPE. These will wipe out a drive completely... Also they can and will be able to wipe your boot record.

if you do not have a generic drive, which I would more assume since you have a ATA133 drive, I would assume that you have like a Maxtor, or Seagate drive... I use only Maxtor, but not because it is all that much better than anyone else, but because I like the drive's performance for me... The way I do it for XP Pro...

((And by the way I have several 98 machines and a couple of ME machines going all the time, but only one XP Pro box)))

The way I do it is that I use the MAXBLAST to set up my dive. This allows for a format and partition to take place before the set up of XP. One other thing I would do, you mention that you are hanging AFTER setup initiates it first drop of files to the drive... This hang would point me, if it were my machine, to the bios settings... I would short out the C-MOS and get the board back to factory specs... The fact that you can load ME and can get through the set up says that normally, the board is not faulty. Try those things:

Use Wipe or AEFDISK (I use AEFDISK) and wipe out the drive completely.

Reset the MOBO to Factory Defaults,

And set up if you can, the disk through the Manufacturer utility...

Let me know what happens...


ALSO, I will say this, I think it was Boomslang that said that your drive may be bad? I had this issue:

I purchased a drive, NIB and set it up, but for the past year now, I have been unable to get an OS to be stable. While on the phone with ZW I went over this problem. It turns out that the drive side of the disk was off just a bit. and I would get errors right at loading, but normally at boot... I replaced the drive and everything is great. XP runs like a champ... It could be the issue, but in oh, 8 some years of computing, this was my first issue with a drive. It is rare, but can happen. If nothing else works, do the above suggestions on a simple 4 GIG drve and see if it loads...

Jeff forgot to mention that you can also try a fdisk /mbr  which will format your master boot record if you cannot get ahold of the utilities Rogue mentioned.

Just remember, FDISK /MBR only swaps the backup copy of your MBR and the active copy.  If you do this twice you will be right back where you started.
