It's dead Jim...
« on: May 16, 2005, 11:04:41 AM »
I played at the GZA event this weekend, processed some great screenshots, got some great footage of the various funny things that happened in Cod.

I returned home and powered up the system, and it says that the  120GB Maxtor drive I have as D:, with all the aforementioned footage and screens on it, needs to be CheckDisked.  Uh Oh.

It finishes at 0210 and I am doing my best to solve this quick so I can sleep.  I have to teach SUnday school in 7.5 hours!

I reboot the system, the BIOS says the drive is there and has the correct information.  Looking good so far.

Login to windows, and try a Windows Explorer session... It's listed under My Computer! Click on D: and get an error message: "This device has a corrupt file or directory and cannot be read from."  Nothing more than that.

*sigh*

Run the PowerMax utility.

Basic tests are fine.  Run the advanced tests... errors found, do you want to fix them. Yes, I do dag it!!!

ERROR!!!  This drive has fatal errors that cannot be fixed.  Please contact Maxtor for a RMA number to replace this drive.

Remove the drive, reset the BIOS, and the jumpers on the master drive ( My trusty Western Digital 80GB ) so that it knows that it is the only drive in the system again.

Go to Maxtor's site, and start the process.
Step 1: Pick the model
Step 2: Input the Serial Number.
Step3:  Wait, there is no Step 3!!  My drive is out of warranty! :swear:

So now I must reinstall my games, buy a new drive, and waste all my time.  :x

So now I will go buy a new drive and guess what I am NOT buying.  Maxtor.  Never really liked them, to many failures.  This just proves it.

What's your horror story?

I can't say any bad about Maxtor, I've ran on their drives for at least the last 5 years with no failure due to a HDD. OS and virus/spyware from hell is the only reasons for past reloads!

Maxtor drives good, they just don't likey ZWarrior's!  :lol

I've had several WD and Maxtor drives.  Most of them have served me well.  I have had 1 of each go bad.  So I guess...go Seagate!!! LOL I have a couple of scsi seagates that have craked away for a very long time although I thought one was bad...I later found out the problem was 1 stick of memory.  I had an IBM drive go bad too, but it was very very old.  Also seen a hitachi drive go bad in a laptop.  So none of them are a sure thing...that's why wise Jedi always backup...or run raid or both.
Luck is better than skill anyday! The more skill I get, the luckier I get!

I was trying to backup, but don't have the storage space, yet.  working on that.

I have to say, Seagate SCSI is the way to go.  They knew how to make those babies, but IDE?  Not a goot idea.

Hey, I have IDE and have had no problem with it. But still, you could go out and now get a much larger hard drive since they are a lot cheaper!

If I am not mistaken, Seagate ( Who is no longer Seagate, but some other manufacturer under that label ) and IBM have the worst records for recall of IDE drives in the past 5 years.
