Too much gaming?
« on: January 11, 2005, 11:24:59 AM »
Found this article about the so called effects of playing games too much.

Although I do find that going to bed right after 3-4 hours of gaming tends to lead to strange and restless dreams, I am not convinced that this story is very accurate.

It actually sounds more like something you would find on The Onion.

Zoë: Shepard, isn't the Bible kind of specific about killing?
Book: Very specific. It is, however, somewhat fuzzy around the area of kneecaps.

At one point in my life I would play video games for roughly 8- 9 hours a day, everyday, smoetimes I woud play up to 14 hours. I would play DOOM, DOOM2, Space Quest 4, and so many other games, but I never had a problem with seperating games from reality, I did have the urge to play them in school and away from home but i didn't have any ploblem seperating Life from games.
I was 14 years old, and this lasted until I was 18 when I couldn't play as much any more. I still play atleast 4 hours a night, but I don't do it every night, I have other things to do too.

I find theat the people in the article have more serious problems then games and need to maybe visit was a doctor about it.

I can understand some things like when I've played Homeworld for a while, if I'm looking at a graphic either on the web or a diagram, I will get the urge to right click and rotate it around so I can see the other side or the bottom.  There are also some times I've thought, "Gee, it would be great if I could telefrag that guy, hehehe!"  I might even make my fingers go through the movement of doing it...just for the satisfaction.  "Dude if we were in UT you would be sooooo fragged by now!"  It's a pleasant thought.
Luck is better than skill anyday! The more skill I get, the luckier I get!

I know that I do relate to some things with a reference to the games I play, like wanting to pop a smoke and leave a meeting, or drop a 'nade in an office as I walk by, or mince somebody particulary annoying with a flak cannon round.  But do I have a problem relating to reality after playing?  Nope. I relate just fine.

I reference many things, Games, Movies, something someone told me. But Referencing is something as humans we do there is nothing wrong with it. Like you said ZWarrior, You reference games you've played as do I. There is a huge difference in referencing and relating, or acting upon.  When you said you like to drop a 'nade in an office as you walk by is harmless. Even if you imagine it your fine. Now if you actually do it, that is living in the game and the player you just fragged won't respawn.
But we all make references to the things we do and that is perfectly normal.

Personally I think the article was just more liberal technology bashing.  I know, let's all go live in the woods again.
