another ram question.
« on: July 13, 2004, 07:00:07 PM »
I have a choice to make. I have narrowed my choice of ram down to two types.

Corsair pc3200 1gb(2x512mb) cas:2-2-2-6
Corsair pc3200 1gb(2x512mb) cas:2-3-3-6

The 2-2-2 stuff costs nearly $100 more so I'm leaning heavy toward the 2-3-3 but my question is would I see any real increase in speed. I'm running 2-2-2-6 now but it's only 512mb (and I NEED 1GB )).

Thanks!

You really would be able to tell the difference in my opinion.

I think it would only show under really heavy loads.  But I can't say that if it did show that it would be a $100 difference.

My budger mindedness says that it's not worth the difference.

But that is my $.015.  ;)

If you have 512 at 2-2-2-5 will bench mark faster But 1 gig at 2-3-3-7 the computer will run faster and you will see the difference. What ever you do 1 gig at the slower timings will improve your speed.
I run 4 banks of 512 hyper x at 2-3-3-7 and is faster than when I run 2 banks at 2-2-2-5 I can see the differance in the way the computer runs. But it will bench mark in 3dmark faster.
in the real world seeing the computer run fast is better. Go with 1 gig even if the timing is slower.

So the question is still....

Is the faster RAM worth the extra $100?

Memory Speed and the System Cache

It is important to remember that the use of large, efficient primary and secondary caches in modern PCs means that most requests for instructions or data by the processor are satisfied from cache and not the system memory. While increasing the speed of memory definitely has a positive performance impact, often that improvement is masked by the fact that typically, only 5-10% of all memory requests actually result in memory accesses. This means that using memory that is 50% faster than an older kind will only result in a system-level performance gain of 2.5-5%. This phenomenon is the main reason why SDRAM, despite being much faster than its predecessors, has not revolutionized the PC, only evolved it.

You can not see 5%... No faster ram is not worth it. More ram yes

I vote for Ballblazer :lol . To make it more fun I vote for the c64 version (and I could bring the c64). :8o:

My ram purchase will have to wait another week as my laptop died ;(: and I had to buy a replacement. Getting an ibm T21 800mhz p3. Not a bad way to spend $400 (should arive on the 17th :rolling ).:

Ebay. I have had good luck with laptops there. The seller I got mine from has a perfect record for selling computers (inc laptops)

Might have to look into that further once my funding loosens up a bit.

posting from my new laptop.

A few minor problems but nothing $40 can't fix. I'm also going to have to replace the hdd as it sounds bad to me (although it works and has no bad sectors). What I like most about the t21 is it has a light for the keyboard. Works well! can't wait to get downtown now (all thos ap's just waiting :evil )

most likely part it out and sell it. The motherboard is the only bad part.

I am thinking about keeping it long enough to get a new board (about $65)
