My current system still has the specs then.  But I am thinking that something is up with the vid card.  I was playing UT and started getting trash on the screen.  That usually indicates a problem with the VRAM.  Not good, not good at all.

The ASUS V8420 Geforce 4 TI4200 128M is $178 at newegg.  Not a bad price.

Why would anyone buy an out dated video card is beond me. You can get a ati 8500 for 99.00 if you want to go that way. I posted 8255 with my P3 1.266s on 3dmark 2001se with the newest drivers. No one in the clan can beat that. Well maybe Spade after his upgrade.

Because the Ti4400 is the 3rd fastest card on the market, and for the price is well worth the purchase.  But then, I may not be able to get a new card before the latest nVida card comes out, so the price on the Ti4600 may drop and I will get IT instead.

The GF2 TI4200 beat out the Radeon 8500 in all the benchmarks at Tom's VGA Charts so that's why I've been keeping my eye on it, and the Asus is very fast as far as the 4200's go.  If you want to same the $70 then go with the 8500.  As far as out dated, I'd rather wait until it's a little older before I buy then I'm not paying the premium.  It's not like it's that old.  It's like buying a new car, why pay for all that depreciation, wait a year and buy it off a lease or something and save $1000's.

I don't have the $335 for a 9700 pro.  I'll wait till it's less than $200.

My point exactly!  Why spend the mega-bucks, when you can wait 6-8 months and have the card at more than half price and use it for 1.5 - 2 years.

I can have the fastest card on earth but your monitor refreshes at 75 and your card is at 300fps guess what you see. 75.Thats why I have a little slower card (350fps in ut)  But It Looks So much better than a GF4. And right now you can get it for $89. FPS is so over rated.

Here is some good reading for all of you who want to understand FPS and MHZ or refresh rates of a monitor.  It will address what we are capible of seeing as humans and what is really needed.  Enjoy. http://www.planetdescent.com/d3help/framerate.shtml:shock:

Interesting review of URT, I posted the bad only because we have all wondered about the slow load time and it also addresses refresh rate.

The Bad
I’ve given this game so much praise, but as always, you can’t tell about the good without commenting on the bad. UT has two major faults which are worth mentioning. One, the game loads EXTREMELY SLOW (I know it’s not my system (BTW, it’s a Athlon 700mhz with 128 MB of RAM and a 64 MB GeForce graphics card. because I know 5 other people who have powerful computers, and still experience slow loading times). Even if your system does meet the game requirements, I guarantee it’ll take at least 10-15 seconds for the game to load just to the intro screen. Slow loading also occurs when you start a game. At first, I thought my computer froze, but then I saw the “busy” light flashing, so I waited a while and then it finally loaded. But wait there’s more! I installed a mod for Unreal Tournament and it bumped the waiting and delay time another 25 or so seconds. Second, if you have the Hercules 3d Prophet GeForce-2 GTS 64 MB video card like I have (this may apply to some other video cards as well), chances are your going to run into some loading problems. Sometimes when I attempt to load or minimize the game I hear the music, but the screen is black, nothing loads, and it totally freezes my computer. I have researched this problem on Hercules’s website, and they said to download the latest graphics card and monitor drivers (apparently, it has something to do with the monitor and video card). That didn’t work; so then they said to change the monitor refresh rate to 60hz. Any person who knows a fair deal about computers will tell you running a game with a refresh rate of 60hz sucks-the monitor just can’t keep up with the graphics card, and the game looks all screwed up. Even these setbacks cannot keep me away from Unreal Tournament-when they happen, I just reset my computer and try again.

Thanks!  It certainly was an eye opener for me.  Also noted was the fact thay running 32 bit in a lan enviorment requires twice the bandwidth as running 16 bit.  A suggestion for everyone when gaming on a lan or internet would be to run 16 bit for lowering bandwidth usage which will result in lower ping rates as well.  Last night showed running 16 bit made a great improvement on the Ambush Server.  Great pings and alot of fun.

Pezman posted the following specs for running a dedicated UT2003 server:
In terms of hardware a 1.5 Ghz CPU would be great for running two dedicated servers - we estimate that a 2.5Ghz system should be able to handle 4 16-player dedicated servers if it had 512Mb of RAM. 256Mb is recommended as minimum system RAM for Windows XP/2000 running a single server with approximately 100Mb per additional server being run on that machine.

The ideal Internet connection is a dedicated connection such as a T1 or better. Cable and DSL modems do not make for really great servers as upload bandwidth is usually severely capped which contributes to lag. Most cable/DSL connections would only be able to successfully support up to 8 players with broadband connections. That could mean two 4 player servers on a decent cable/DSL connection or one 8 player server. On a single T1 you would be able to server 32 broadband players quite nicely. So that could be four 8 player servers on one T1 if you wanted to or two 16 player servers. Modem users use less bandwidth and generally UT2003 uses about 25% less bandwidth per user than the original UT but there are far fewer modem users today than there were when UT was released nearly 3 years ago so people are gobbling up bandwidth at a much higher rate. We hope that this information helps answer your questions.

Fragshack:
AMD T-Bird 950
512MB RAM

2 servers of 12 players each.

No problems on LAN, only issue is on a cable modem.
