I don't know if this should be in this thread since it's not really a technical issue but here goes anyway.

Decided to get a cable modem from the local cable company here in Fremont with Earthlink as my ISP. Called in the order and they told me they would send someone out to hook me up. The guy comes and I show him where my computer is and he goes downstairs to run the cable wire. He comes back up and tells me that he cannot hook it up because I have a finished basement, and they will not “fish” the wire though. He told me he would hook it up if I get someone to run the wire. I asked him why someone from the cable company would not run my cable wire and he told me he was a third party contractor and did not actually work for the cable company. I told him that’s fine, just tell the cable company I cancel my order, and then I proceeded to get DLS.

Here’s the funny part.

About 6 months later... I move and decide to get a cable modem again. This time my computer is downstairs and I already have the wire sitting there waiting so there should be no issues. I get hooked up and I’m online. I was told that Earthlink would send me my username, password, and all the usual ISP info in a few days. A few weeks go by and I receive nothing. I call the cable company and they tell me I should have gotten it by now and I should contact Earthlink. So I call Earthlink.  I tell this guy that I got my cable modem hooked up and I need my ISP info. He asks me for a 4-digit code. I tell him I don’t know what code he is talking about. He tells me that I should have gotten a code when I got hooked up. I shuffle though my papers I have from the cable company and find nothing about a 4-digit code. I tell him I can’t find it and he tells me I should have the code from when I got my modem hooked up. I hear him clicking his keyboard and then he tells me that I should have got it in April when I got my modem hooked up. Well April was of course six months ago when I canceled my first order. I explain this to the guy what happened and he tells me he STILL CANNOT HELP ME UNLESS I GIVE HIM THE CODE! At this point I am starting to get annoyed. I explain to him again that I canceled that order, the modem was never hooked up, and I received no code at that time or this time. I have Internet access and the forms in front of me that tell me I have Earthlink as my ISP, I just need the ISP info. Again he askes for my code. I hang up…

I have had this service for about another six months since then and I have not called them back yet. I might get around to it someday…

You have to type in your user name and password which I don't have because I don't have my code ;)

And of course when you call in they won't talk to you to give you that info unless you have the code that you don't have so you can't login to the site, which is why you called them anyway!

Yeah I am paying for it. Yes I know I need to get off my butt and call em.  I have an MSN email address with 10 meg of space so I figure even if I get things straightened out I probably won't even use it anyway, that is why I'm not too concerned about it. I don't really even understand why I have to choose an ISP anyway. As far as I know I would be fine without it. Know what I mean?

It's Time Warner Cable I had a choice of 3 or so company's, one of which was their own. Each had deals going on. Earthlink had a deal where you get your first 6 months at half price so I went with them. It's not really a big deal to me, I just can't believe that the customer service guy was that idiotic.
