First read this:
http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/02q2/020506/index.html

THEN comment on the following questions:

1) Now that Intel is leading again, will you be more willing to use either processor?

2) Does this impact the market?

Now discuss, not flame, discuss...

For buget reasons, I still pick AMD.
I can't afford Intel chips half the time, and can get twice the speed in an AMD for the price. There isn't capatibility issues like in the far past, so why pay the big bucks?

When you break it down to $/Mhz, I can agree.

The P4/2533A works out to .2548, and the Athalon XP 2100+ is .1494/.1281 (the first number is hte rated speed of 1800, and the second number is based on the equivilent speed of 2100)

That still leaves the Intel chips, though faster, in the dust regarding the price breakdown.  I can get a NICE mobo for the difference in price between the XP 2100+ and the P4/2533A.

My comment is based upon two assumptions.  You may have different ones, I just don't care. :jawdrop:

I myself would still go with the ADM family of CPU's.  My reasons are simple.   First, most users, including myself, do not run more than two or three major programs at the same time.  For my personal use, an Athlon 1400 has more processing power than I use or will conceivably use for the next couple of years.  Second reason is the price for performance issue.  Yes, I could go with Intel at the same performance level, but why pay for the name?

Ideally, I'd go with the Intel/Rambus combo just for the memory to CPU bandwidth.  But systems don't really benefit enough to justify the price.  Maybe when the bandwidth is increased for the whole mobo across all buses, I'll spend the big bucks.

Sorry if you don't agree with me.  You suck anyway.  :lol

I am still running a TBird 1Ghz I bought January 2001 (For more on that story, see here ). I spent around $200 for it then, and it is still faster than what I run at work. I will have upwards of 15 apps/windows open on this box when I am hard at coding/surfing/tuning.  Still strong, still worth the coin.

This topic will go on for years to come and that's great for all of us gamers because that means that the competition in the chip market remains and that gives us a fair price.  I have to agree with the price statement of the AMD.  You get alot of CPU for the money and if you put the extra money you would of spent getting a P4 CPU and add it on to your video card budget, You will get more bang for your bucks.  Bottom line AMD is still the CPU of chose for me if you are 1 GIG or higher with 266 Mhz then:

Spend your money on a good MOBO with 266 or higher front side bus.  333 is tops right now.

Invest in a high end graphics card with at least 64 megs of DDR ram.  If you want to really have a card, go for the Gforce4 4600 with 128 Meg of DDR.

Hard drives are running at 133 Mhz now, upgrade that old 66 mhz drive to a 7200 RPM 133 Mhz drive and you will see a big difference.  Just make sure the MOBO supports ATA 133.

AMD is here to stay and for the price I will continue to use them in my machines.

Laze Fare - Free Enterprise

Competition brings better quality features and price to the consumer.  Thank God for AMD, for without them we would all be running pentium 133's still and it would cost $500 per chip.  Well, maybe that's an exageration.  My point is that as long as the products are mostly comperable, I will go with the lowest price for performance.

I just upgraded my 1 ghz to 1.33 ghz t-bird.  For $70, the 1.33 is a good deal.  I hope that AMD has something in it's back pocket to at least compete, if not bypass Intel.   I just like cheering the underdog on.

If you don't have to buy a $20-$40 HSF that helps some.  Of course not using expensive ram would help too, and if the mb's weren't usually $20-$30 more expensive on average.  Not asking much are we.

Some times you have to pay more for the best. DDR400 m/b comming out agp 8x. If you didn't know intel already has a 10.0 cpu. The price on a 2.56 will drop to under 230.oo in 1/03  this chip will over clock 3+ so will the 2.0/533 If you plan on upgrading, wait til next year you might want to get  a ati 9700 pro now that should get you buy or wait 6 mo. and pay 600 for nv30
