I am experienceing a bunch of problems here guys, and need some input.

OS: Win2K Pro (sp2)
CPU: AMD TBird 1GHz
RAM: 512MB
Vid Card: Prophet II MX (GeForce2 MX)

Symptoms: Prior to cleaning out the system, I would get lockups at anytime, after running a while, particularly in "heavy load" games like SS2, MOHAA, and JK2. It would lockup when just sitting running Outlook as well though.

I blew the system out, cleaned all the fans and filters, and reseated all the cards, and the general lockup ended, but the "heavy load" stops and lockups continued. But now I could recover from them by either hitting "Esc" or calling up the Task Manager then returning to the game.

I noticed two thing now though:
1) There are error messages in the System Log pertaining to the Ultra 100 Controller. But not in a few days.
2) When I played JK2 last night, along with the standard graphics only lockups (fixed by hitting escape then returning to the game) and the sound and graphics lockups (fixed by calling up Task Manager then returning to the game) I am starting to see textures that are colored wrong.

Thoughts:
1) Bad HD, Bad VidCard?
2) Maybe bad drivers for Vid Card? (current version 6.13.10.2311)
3) Reload now that it's clean and try again?

Any suggestions?

My thoughts are due to the games you are running you were forced to load DirectX 8.1 which in the same experience with Kyle's machine...Your MX card does not support it well. I have had many lockups with the MX card due to 8.1. Try DXDIAG and see if you have any errors or tests that show problems.

Vid card could very well do it. But, I've got the exact same setup only running XP Pro. No vid problems here. Have you got a spare DIMM to try?

xp pro and 2000 pro are almost identical

They are both based on NT and the way to get things done is the same

and you can use 2000 drivers for xp (IE my boomslang 2000)

Not quite....

Very few....XP tends to get sick if you try too many of the 2000 drivers.

I should have clarified. I agree on the NT thing, but not totally on the way to get things done.

ok let me clarifiy myself now...

I'm talking like how the devise manager is setup and how you go about seting up various things like tcp/ip and other networking utilities (OH and dont forget the SWEET fading efect)

The differences between the two versions of the operating system are minimal, and they may be mixed in an enterprise client OS strategy of "managed diversity."

Windows XP is an update to 2000 much like ME was a update to 98.

I was going to post something along those lines, but You did a great job for me Spade.

The short of it...
Windows 2000 was built using the kernal and HAL from Windows NT 4.0. They improved stability and MANY other things. Yes, Unix is still a more stable OS, but then look at the differences in time and approaches.

Windows XP is built on the Win2K kernal and HAL. with a great many improvements to those items. M$ has kept the backward compatible rule, thus making XP able to run MOST 2K drivers, but not all. But this is also one of the greatest causes for the general stability issues for M$ OSes.

Thus they are built on NT technology, but the XP server will be a different beast of it's own. Supposedly.

I am now contemplating the purchase of a VisionTek Xtasy 6964. Which is a GeForce3 Titanium Ti 500 64m AGP card. That takes me from a generation2 card to a generation3 (yes, it's still one generation back, but it's not too expensive, and better than the geforce4 MX), moves me from SDR to DDR, and doubles my RAM.

I fixed a part of the problem. I tried to play UT last night, and the screen went to shades of pink and blue last night. I went out the the web, and downloaded the 2 previous version drivers for my card, then removed the current drivers I was running, which were the latest 28.x drivers.

Restarted, and loaded the 12.41 drivers. No more color changes! Plus, I then went into JK2, and the graphics lockups were gone. The app lockups are still there, but the graphics aren't freezing anymore.

This means that I wouln't die while trying to get the screen back!

I am thinking of reloading the system again as there may have been corruption of files during the original load of the OS.

You may want to remove the paperclip out of the other port of your vid card. You know it sounds like you still haven't done that yet!

Actually I used the same CD and code for both my laptop and my PC, and interesting ly enough, they both have OS problems. I am going to reload the laptop today and see if it's the software.

It's good to have MSDN!:hat
