Heat sinks?
« on: May 22, 2002, 04:35:55 PM »
OK, after the last game day, it's evident that I need some better cooling.  First I've found a new case that I'm going to get that should help.  I'm also going to upgrade my cpu.  I want some opinions on which heat sink to get.  I've been using the thermaltake mini super orb, not too bad but not great.  I don't mind spending a little extra for a better heatsink, I've looked at the Thermaltake Valcano 7, it has some good reviews.  What do all ya all think? What's your preference?

First, as a user of the Super Orb, I would recommend against it.  The main thing I discovered was that it really isn't all that efficient.  There are, however, some good reviews of the Volcano.  Also, we posted a link to a review a few weeks ago.  TechZone reviewed the Dr. Thermal EXTREME! from Crazy PC.  it comes in at 39.95, so it's not TOO expensive, and it compared well to the Volcano series.

Well, it's getting time to upgrade again.

What have you all found for HSF?

What good, what's bad?

I have a Volcano 7... and it has been great!  At first it 'seemed' like it wasn't working but my temps were always fine.. Now that I have Winxp... my temp is stable at 96degrees at bootup and with game running 105 degrees......

But there has been better heat sinks since then....

I'll try this one more time.  I was hoping for some good info from my more technical friends.  Thermaltake just came out with a new HSF.  With so many options, I'm finding getting quality info very difficult.  Links would be appreciated.

Thanks!!!!

First off let's start off with the most obvious.
http://www17.tomshardware.com/cpu/20030113/index.html

Short story nothing new, Swiftech good, and everything else bad.  Admitly I have no real world experience, but I plan on going with  a Swiftech mc370 if I remember correctly.  Expensive, no fan, but the 2nd best heatsink on the market.  Also I like the no fan option, allows me to find one that is real quiet.  I hate noise.

Thanks!  I had read the article at Tom's when it was published, but this week when I went to find the article, I didn't find it. So that helps.

No problem I was just reading it the other day and it was easy for me to find.  The real problem exist in finding a HSF that is quiet and efficient that does not cost over $40.  Let me know if you find it.
