Conclusion: The Coming Months Should Be A Good Time To Buy A Video Card!

In an industry not quite ready to declare that happy days are here again, it is understandable the amount of emphasis that is being placed on the value and mainstream market segments. Our own Omid Rahmat, love him or hate him, in his tongue-and-cheek Valentine's Day special column hit the nail right on the head when he said "That means, NVIDIA, for all its faults right now, is a reflection of where the market is going." Clearly ATI has been following Omid's advice and they are ready to jump in and be even more aggressive in the mainstream and value segments with the 9600 and 9200.

The coveted sweet spot of the market, this is where most of you pick the cards that you buy. Yes, we all want a $399 killer super card, but we have bills to pay and wifes to answer to and we sometimes have to settle for something less. The reality of what has taken place here with these launches at GDC is that an aggressive pricing/performance war is going to take place. The battle lines are drawn with Nvidia wanting to maintain its leadership in this arena and ATI wanting to chip away at this market segment.

Of course the benefactor of this is the consumer who is finally going to get a Direct X 9 feature set at an incredible price and with wider adoption of these Direct X 9 cards, clearly the software developers are going to step up to the plate and deliver the new next generation titles that will make these new cards truly useful. At least this is how it is supposed to work, but over the next couple of months some great deals are going to be available on graphics cards, so do the research and as always we will help you with that by giving you through test results to allow you to compare the cards, and help the tech industry out by upgrading your graphics card.

I love it when the companies have to tighten the belt and deliver products that work at a price we can afford!

NVIDIA GeForce FX 5800 Ultra is For Sale in Japan.

Four Months After the Announcement
by Anton Shilov
03/16/2003 | 06:42 PM

As X-bit labs predicted just one day less than four months ago, the first appearance of the GeForce FX 5800-based graphics cards in retail happened this weekend, four months after the announcement of the graphics processors. As reported at this Japanese-web-site reports, V9900 Ultra graphics cards from ASUSTeK Computer are available in numerous retail stores in Tokyo.

The prices on the novelty that boasts with 500/1000MHz speed for GPU and memory, 128MB of DDR-II SDRAM and features above and beyond DirectX 9.0 are a bit disappointing: from $498 to $542. It is not like you pay for extra performance or even the more advanced capabilities the GeForce FX 5800 Ultra can provide over the RADEON 9700 PRO, but you pay this enormous sum for getting a rare graphics card among the first. Even though BFG Technologies started to supply the first batch of the GeForce FX powered products some time ago to the US customers (see this news-story), there are still no such graphics cards in retail, as far as I know.

Well, the GeForce FX 5800 Ultra has at last made its appearance. I believe that the GeForce FX 5800 Ultra (aka NV30) will make its more or less massive appearance in Europe and the USA in the coming weeks. It is not really on time, but behind the schedule because NVIDIA promised in November to start selling the actual graphics cards in February, but, at least, the product is finally available. Will it be a good buy? Definitely, but it will not be a better buy than the code-named NV35 that is just around the corner and that is going to be considerably more powerful compared to the predecessor (see this and this stories).

After much review and investigation, I have completed what one might say is my last upgrade for a while.  I think I am at the point of being able to last for quite a while now.  I continued on with AMD and have a true 333 mhz through-put, no bottlenecks.   Here are the components and I am very pleased with the outcome and performance.

Windows XP Professional with SP-1

Asus A7N8X Deluxe motherboard – Features AGP-Pro 8x, Dual 3Com Lan, and 128-bit TwinBank DDR Memory architecture doubles the DDR 400 (PC3200) bandwidth. System bottlenecks are eliminated with balanced architecture and peak bandwidth up to 6.4GB/s.

Corsair TwinX Dual Channel Memory Kit with Low Latency (Two paired 256 MB PC2700 @ 2-2-2-5-T1)
The TWINXTM memory kits are composed of two low latency memory modules that have been tested as a pair in an Asus A7N8X dual channel motherboard. The matched pair of modules are then physically packaged together, guaranteeing that the customer receives a product that has been verified in the dual channel environment. These memory kits are available in sizes of both 512 MByte (two 256 MByte modules) and 1 GByte (two 512 MByte modules), at speeds of either 333 MHz (also known as PC2700) or 400 MHz (also known as PC3200).

I have no expectation of any one being easy on me.  That is just part of the game.  I can't wait until I can start gamming again.

Forgot to add that I just wired the house for a cable modem, just need to get a power suply for the modem I have.

Also forgot the display.  For home use a Sun Microsystems 21" crt made by Sony, and for the road a Viewsonic G90FB.

I thought that the avatar was cool.
